place value understanding

This discussion is part of a collection:Place Value

What lessons or techniques do you think provide students with a thorough understanding of place value and its applications?

I've used a number trick involving casting out nines (digital root). The 4 in 42 can be valued at 4 tens or (4 nines + 4). That's why the remainder of 42/9 is the sum of the digits 4+2. You can participate in the trick which employs this principle at Fido Puzzle

I love to use manipulatives whether hands on or virtual to teach place value. I remember learning with bundles of stick when I was younger and that always has made sense to me. There is a virtual manipulative on this site called Bead Sticks which show how each column represents a different value.
