Hands on Strategies

This discussion is part of a collection:Equivalent Fractions

Many of the interactive white board activities listed in this collection work as great reinforcement, but probably not the best initial experience. What hands on strategies work best when teaching students the initial concept of equivalent fractions?

In the PD collection "Introducing Measurement Concepts K-2" in the Journal Articles section there is a link to a wonderful article that describes how a teacher used early measurement concepts to introduce simple equivalent fractions. The title is "Inchworm and a Half: Developing Fraction and Measurement Concepts Using Mathematical Representations". You have to either purchase the article or have be a member of NCTM with a subscription to the journal "Teaching Children Mathematics" but this article is well worth it!

Great idea Path! I will use my new NCTM membership to go read that article.
