Connections to Operation Tables

I wonder if students who have trouble "seeing" an array as a way to organize objects might also be the ones who have trouble understanding how to use an operation table? Following a row or column might be more difficult that I realize for a young child. Anyone have any tips for recognizing and helping with this situation?


With both arrays and operation tables I think the key is to start small. With operation tables I would also have students use highlighter or colored notecards to help them "trace" the columns and see the answer.
