Asking questions

This discussion is part of a collection:CCSS Practice Standard 2

The article "Using Questioning to Stimulate Mathematical Thinking" in the PD collection for SMP 2 offers a number of good questions to stimulate students' thinking. Do you have any to add? What questions do you ask when a child just doesn't "get it" when faced with a challenging problem?

I like to first make sure that the student understands the problem. I often ask, "Can you draw a picture of the situation or act it out with objects?" This way as we talk through the problem students often will realize what they need to do or where they went wrong, if not, then I might be able to see it and help to redirect their problem solving.
