Although, mathematics isn’t my strongest suit but I have mustered the strength to bring you a list of greatest mathematicians for which some would bash me for even glorifying these personalities because we never learned how to do the math and we were at our weakest in the subject all through our high-school.

But their contribution is far beyond what you and I learn in the classroom for that age and day. Their deductions laid grounds for extensive study in the fields of Physics, Geometry, Chemistry, Geography, Astrology etc. Let’s look at the list now,

1. Alan Turing

His contributions were significant in winning the war against Germans in WW2 for Allies. He crafted the first modern day computer of the time. The machine was able to decipher German Enigma Encryptions that were relayed over radio, which before were intercepted by the British but couldn’t be cracked.

After the war, he dedicated his time to furthering computing research. His papers on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) are still applicable today and developed ‘Turing test’ (a measure whereby a computer’s intelligence is measured).

He was honored with the Father of Computer Science, Order of the British Empire Recipient award.

2. Pythagoras

We’ve all heard of the Pythagoras Theorem but did you know it was named after the Greek mathematician Pythagoras of Samos? Well, now you know. He laid the foundation for advanced mathematics. As mentioned earlier, he’s attributed to Pythagoras Theorem in trigonometry.

His theorem serves as a cornerstone in contemporary measurements and hi-tech equipment. In addition, it addresses other areas of mathematics such as it paved way for the expansion of geometry. He is considered as the father of math.

3. Andrew Wiles

A currently alive mathematician who’s most notable work is his proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. His contribution the world of mathematics is not as significant as the others on this list but it is to his credit the t he disappeared from public’s eye for almost 7 years straight to come up with the proof for the said theorem, instead of inventing one.

Upon finding that the solution had an error that prevented it from proving the theorem he took off again for a year before it came down to finally being accepted/authenticated. Can you imagine the drive behind his work here? Unparalleled!

4. Isaac Newton & Wilhelm Leibniz

Consider this as a single set because both these two gentlemen are attributed to have come up with modern infinitesimal calculus (MIC) but different branches. Both have made huge additions to the aforementioned area of mathematics.

Leibniz introduced modern standard notation (integral sign) and helped develop the Typology branch of MIC, whilst, all-rounder Sir Isaac Newton is associated and hailed as the inventor of Calculus side of the MIC discipline since he gave many his proofs in his one of the most important works called Principia.

5. Leonardo Pisano Blgollo

Aka Leonardo Fibonacci is one of the finest mathematicians of middle ages. He introduced the concept of Fibonacci Series to the West. Although it was not uncommon for the Indian mathematicians but sequence given by him was very intuitive and can be mapped to any biological system.

His contribution is also present in Arabic numbering system. Having spent time in North Africa he learned Arabic and found its efficacy to be more than heavy Roman numerals. His pursuit led him to meet renowned mathematicians of the Arab world. When you see Arabic number applied to world scenarios today, it is largely thanks to Blgollo.

Other notable mathematicians include Rene Descartes, Euclid, Bernhard Riemann, and Gauss – the ‘Prince of Mathematics’, and Euler among others with substantial contributions to their names.
