Train Race

Students using this Shockwave applet will extend their basic understanding of median, mean and range while also practicing elapsed time. Data about particular trains is given, and users compare calculations to determine which train will most reliably carry a passenger to their destination in time. Level 1 involves median and range with whole number times. In Level 2 users calculate means and ranges with departure times of 1/2 and 1/4 hours. In Level 3 departure times and journey times are in minutes. A built-in calculator helps users compute means. A Key Idea page provides background information on mean, median and range, and how to compare choices using them. A set of student activity printouts (School Sports Day) is available for further practice.

      Good Practice

    • This application provides good practice with median and range, with a nice tie-in to time. But it would not be a good introduction to the skill, much better for practice.

    • There is a lot going on here. Median, range, mean, decision making, reading schedules, 24-hour times, decimal hours to minutes, calculating ARR times, and tutorial, hints and a calculator keypad provided.
