This interactive Java applet helps users develop two-dimensional spatial reasoning skills. The applet allows users to choose from 12 pentominoes to place and combine on the drawing board. Each pentomino contains 5 square units connected to form different shapes. The user can flip, slide, and turn each pentomino. A set of five activities encourages students to build congruent shapes, create stair step figures, name them according to letters from the alphabet to which they are similar, and build shapes with varying perimeters. This versatile applet can also readily be used to address additional concepts including area, transformations, symmetry, similarity, tilings, and tessellations.
