Measurement Fundamentals

This 26-minute video, the second in a series of twelve, is part of the web-based course for K-8 teachers entitled Learning Math: Measurement offered by the Annenberg Foundation. Participants explore procedures for measuring and learn about standard units in the metric and customary systems, the relationships among units, and the approximate nature of measurement. In this video participants examine fundamental ideas such as unit iteration, partitioning and precision, ratio, and scale. This resource is included in the following PD Collection(s):
Introducing Measurement Concepts K-2This collection of resources is intended to help educators introduce measurement concepts to primary grade students. The resources assist in teaching the concepts of units of measurement, recognizing measurable attributes, comparing sizes, and estimating measurements. Videos, articles, instructor guides, lessons and unit plans are included. More measurement resources can be found in a companion classroom collection and in a second PD collection for grades 3-5.
Teaching Measurement in Grades 3-5This collection of resources is intended to help educators develop measurement skills and understanding in mathematical and real-world contexts. The resources assist in teaching selection of unit, comparing sizes, estimating, calculating elapsed time, and measuring length, angle, area, and volume. Resource types include videos, articles, instructor guides, lessons and unit plans. More measurement resources can be found in a companion classroom collection and in a second PD collection for grades K-2.

    • Watching the video in its entirety provided me with a strong background understanding of the fundamentals of measurement and that the measure is only an estimate. Precision is based on size of the unit and the ability of the measurer to use the tool. Having the teachers construct their proportional stick figures on an 11.5 inch paper was a stellar activity as well as locating 17/48 on the number line by repeated partitioning. Great resource for pd in measurement.
