Resources and Tools for Elementary Math Specialists and Teachers

Collections

Professional Development Collections support the growing needs of elementary educators. These skill and knowledge-building collections are designed around core themes and provide a set of carefully selected resources, teaching supports and a discussion area.
This collection aims to shed light on Practice Standard 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively, and offers instructional strategies for helping students make sense of quantities and their relationships in problem situations. These resources provide meaningful ways to support children as they learn to represent problem contexts with numbers and symbols, and then re-interpret the numbers and symbols in terms of the original problem. A companion Classroom Collection includes resources to help teachers develop this practice with their students.
This collection assists teachers as they integrate Mathematical Practice Standard 3 into their classroom routines. Encouraging productive student conversations about mathematics builds the foundation that supports this practice. These resources will help teachers learn methods for creating an environment where constructing arguments and critiquing the reasoning of peers is a common occurrence. Additional resources may be found in a companion classroom collection.
This collection supports teachers as they integrate Practice Standard 4 into their classroom routines. In these articles, videos, and lesson studies, teachers will see strategies that help guide students to use concrete, pictorial, and symbolic representations to describe mathematical situations in everyday life. Additional resources for immediate use in the classroom can be found in a companion classroom collection.
This collection of resources supports teachers as they integrate Mathematical Practice Standard 5, Use Appropriate Tools Strategically, into their classrooms. They illustrate strategies that promote student exploration of mathematical tools, increase the accessibility of mathematical tools within the classroom, and encourage students to identify the strengths and limitations of various tools so they can make sound choices. Additional resources for use in the classroom can be found in a companion classroom collection.
Common Core’s Mathematical Practice 6, Attend to Precision, calls for students to be clear in their reasoning, calculation, and communication through the precise use of words, symbols, units of measure, mathematical expressions, and processes. Students recognize various levels of precision and apply them appropriately; they calculate accurately and efficiently. These resources are intended to help teachers and math specialists understand the intent and scope of MP 6 and plan for successful attainment in the classroom. A companion Classroom collection, Implementing CCSS Practice Standard 6, includes resources to help teachers foster this practice with their students.
This collection supports teachers as they integrate Practice Standard 7 into their classroom routines. In these articles and videos, teachers will see strategies that help guide students to look for and make use of structure as they discover and understand mathematical concepts. Additional resources for immediate use in the classroom can be found in a companion classroom collection.
