This activity gives students the chance to explore area and perimeter in a problem solving setting. Nine differently-sized squares need to be tiled into a rectangular frame of unknown proportions. Three prompts of solving strategies are provided. Ideas for implementation, extension and support are included along with a printable sheet of the problem.

This iOS app is an open-ended tool for exploring a variety of mathematical topics. Learners stretch colored bands around pegs to form line segments and polygons in order to make discoveries about perimeter, area, angles, congruence, and fractions. Users can switch from a 25-peg board to an expanded 150-peg board and fill in the interior of shapes with transparent color.

The applets in this Interactive Geometry Dictionary (IGD) will allow students an opportunity to explore finding the area of some common shapes. The applets demonstrate how to find the area of a triangle using the area of a parallelogram, which in turn can be found using the area of a rectangle. This 26-minute video, the second in a series of twelve, is part of the web-based course for K-8 teachers entitled Learning Math: Measurement offered by the Annenberg Foundation. Participants explore procedures for measuring and learn about standard units in the metric and customary systems, the relationships among units, and the approximate nature of measurement. In this video participants examine fundamental ideas such as unit iteration, partitioning and precision, ratio, and scale. This interactive Java applet use arrays and three different computational models (Grouping, Common, or Lattice) to help students visualize and understand the process of multiplication of whole numbers. In each method the user drags sliders to adjust the two factors and then observes the resulting changes in the rectangular array and in the respective algorithm and product.

This is a sample PARCC assessment task based on CCSS grade 3 operations and algebraic thinking standards as well as the measurement and data standards. In this interactive multi-step task students must write a number sentence that can be used to find how many tiles high the mural is at school and then show the value of the Distributive Property in solving a problem. Included are the alignments to the CCSS, a scoring rubric and background on the task itself.

This interactive Java applet allows users to explore the relationship between area and perimeter of both rectangles and irregular shapes. In the "Auto Draw" mode a shape is given, and the user finds the area and the perimeter. In the "Create Shape" mode users create their own shape and give the area and perimeter of that shape. The activity allows users to explore the relationship between shapes with a fixed perimeter and variable area or shapes with a a fixed area and variable perimeter. An optional scoring feature allows users to keep track of the number correct.
