This interactive Flash applet develops children's fraction concepts (partitioning, equivalence, and unit) by building on their informal understanding of rational numbers in the familiar context of sharing cookies fairly among friends. Users decide on the number of friends, the shape and number of the cookies, and how to cut and distribute them equally. The activity is very flexible and incorporates multiple representations of fractions, area models, numerical symbols, and voice cues. Downloadable pdfs of cookie images are provided as well as a User Manual that includes implementation suggests and a review of research.

In these pattern block activities, students explore geometric models of fractions to discover relations among them, reinforcing their concepts of fractions and providing a visual model for fraction operations. Lessons can be worked on paper or using a pattern block applet. Teacher notes are included.

This interactive game, similar to "Fraction Game" (catalogued separately) allows two students an opportunity to think about how fractions are related to a unit whole, compare fractional parts of a whole, and find equivalent fractions. Two players move markers a total distance (forwards and backwards directions) that equals the random target fraction box, along their choice of seven parallel number line tracks, which are divided into different fractional parts. The goal is to move each of the seven markers to the right side of the game board before your opponent does. Instructions and discussion questions are given.

Twenty-eight lesson plans make up this research-based fourth and fifth grade fraction curriculum. It includes a teacher guide with theoretical framework and instructions and templates for making manipulatives. The Rational Number Project is an NSF-funded multi-university research project, and originally published this series of lessons in 1997 as "Fraction Lessons for the Middle Grades Level 1". This is an updated version, aligned to NCTM Standards for 2000.

This webpage contains sample items and performance tasks from the Smarter Balanced assessment system in mathematics as well as English LA/Literacy. They are intended to help teachers, administrators, and policymakers implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) prepare for next-generation assessments and plan the required shifts in instruction. Sample items and tasks can be viewed by grade band (grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school) or content focus. They showcase the variety of item types, including technology-enhanced items and performance tasks, that will be included in the assessment system. A drop-down tab provides information on each item, including grade level, CCSS alignment, and a scoring rubric for performance tasks.

This fraction game from GregTangMath.com provides users with challenges in mental reasoning about identifying, simplifying, comparing, and calculating with fractions. Players choose which skill they would like to focus on, then pick the operation or level within that skill. The game keeps track of how long it takes the player to complete the specified number of trials accurately.
