This interactive Flash applet contains a progressive range of exercises to sharpen mental math and recall of number facts. Levels include one-digit addition and subtraction within 20, two-digit addition and subtraction within 100, and multiplication up to x5 and x10. The goal is to complete 10 correctly as quickly as possible. An incorrect answer deletes a point, discouraging guessing. At the end of each round the applet reports the time taken and the number of errors. | Activity, Interactive Media Grade Level: 1, 2, 3, 4

This website provides learners with lessons and practice problem to understand the Model-Drawing method and its advantages in visualizing word problems. Six other approaches to solving math problems are also presented: Draw a Picture, Look for a Pattern, Guess and Check, Make a Systematic List, Logical Reasoning and Work Backwards. Lessons are for grades 3-6 and each grade has activities for 4 levels of difficulty. | Instructional Strategy, Lesson Plans, Problem Set Grade Level: 3, 4, 5, 6+

This page provides examples of Third Grade Number (Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, and Number Operations-Fractions) activities aligned with the Common Core State Standards. A CCSS standard is stated and the possible activities are listed below and linked. All activities are suitable for use in Math Centers, small group or whole class settings and are designed to elicit a range of responses and provide opportunities for students to communicate their reasoning and mathematical thinking. Instructions for each task are typed in large print and written in child-friendly language to enable students to work on activities independently after a brief introduction to the task. All files listed are in PDF format. | Activity, Game Grade Level: 3

This interactive online game helps students develop fluency with multiplication facts as well as strategic thinking. The goal is to claim four numbers in a row (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally) on a 6 by 6 game board displaying the products of one-digit numbers. Players take turns moving one of the two factor markers to claim a product on the board before time runs out. This game is part of NCTM's Calculation Nation project. Users may login as a guest and play against the computer, or register (free) to challenge other players online. | Activity, Game, Interactive Media Grade Level: 3, 4, 5

This is an archive of previous problems from "Math by the Month", a regular department of Teaching Children Mathematics Journal from NCTM for K-5 teachers that features activities organized by grades K-2 and grades 3-5 and usually based on a theme associated with the particular month. Activities and problems posed are classroom-tested with an inquiry or problem-solving orientation. | Problem Set Grade Level: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 |
