Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Grade(s) 1 resources related to the following standard:
Number and Operations in Base Ten
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.
6. Subtract multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 from multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 (positive or zero differences), using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

This 46-page pdf document demonstrates the connections between the CCSS content standards and the mathematical practice standards. It is a compilation of research, standards from several states, instructional strategies, common misconceptions, and examples for each standard at the grade 1 level. It is intended to help teachers understand what each standard means in terms of what students must know and be able to do. Additional flip books are cataloged separately for grades K and 2-5.

This interactive Java applet helps students understand place value and regrouping. Base 10 is the default, but users may choose to work in base 2 or 5. A user places (or removes) chips of three colors in three columns to represent numbers of up to three digits. When the number of chips in any column equals the base number, the user can exchange them for a chip in the next column. Similarly a chip of a higher value can be exchanged for the base number of chips of the lower value. The applet can be used to model addition and subtraction with regrouping.

This interactive 100 grid has a variety of open-ended uses. Users can "make" as many counters as they choose from among three different kinds, and then drag them onto the grid, allowing any number to be covered by up to 3 different markers at one time. An Ideas page offers possible tasks and games suited to the applet.

This interactive Flash applet supports the exploration of numbers to 100 by simulating a 100-bead string. A teacher or child can move all or some beads to the left or right to add and subtract. The controls allow users to move beads individually or 10 at a time to model different counting and calculation strategies. Users can hide or show the numbers represented by the beads. This applet lends itself well to use on an interactive white board. A pdf guide to this collection of teaching applets is cataloged separately.

This article proposes a structured set of lively, brief, daily exercises designed to help children master number facts and mental math skills. Each day's practice focuses on a small, highly focused, manageable, and strategically selected set of facts or skills that builds directly on the previous days' learning. Related resources (Practice and videos) are cataloged separately.

This flexible interactive applet helps students develop number sense and fluency as they explore number sequences and patterns. Users can select preset or random number lines, or create their own by entering starting numbers and increments. Colored blocks can be dragged to hide or reveal specific terms in any sequence. Starting numbers and increments may be positive or negative; they may also be decimals. An Ideas page suggests possible uses for this applet.

This article focuses on the role and techniques of effective ("distributed") practice that leads to full and fluent mastery of mental mathematics as well as conceptual growth around properties of arithmetic. It lists the essential mental math skills needed for fluent computation at grades 1, 2, and 3. The article describes a number of strategies for developing mental skills and links to pages with more details on others (some not yet complete). While this article refers to the Think Math! curriculum published by EDC, the methods generalize to any program. The Fact of the Day technique and a related video are cataloged separately.
